Day 2 - Barro Colorado Island (Friday) |
|
Starts at 6:30 am from your hotel.
Part of the Barro Colorado Nature Monument this 1,500 hectare island is home to researchers from the Smithsonian Research Institute. This artificial island sits in Gatun Lake right in the middle of the Panama Canal and is one of the most studied islands in the world becoming a center for research of biodiversity of plants and animals.
This tour starts at 6:30 am from your hotel. We’ll travel to Gamboa where we will take a boat and navigate through the Gatun Lake amid tropical forest and the gorgeous scenery of the Panama Canal’s waterway, while the tour guide provides you with information about the island and its origins. Upon arrival to the island we will start our walk through the nature trails. Accompanied by an expert guide, you’ll find out details of how the island is home to 72 species of bats, 122 mammal species, monkeys, sloths and over a thousand plant species. Get up close and personal with nature in one tour that’s sure to take your breath away. |

Day 3 – Partial Panama Canal transit (Saturday) |
|
Tour starts at 9 a.m. from your hotel.
Beginning our transit in Gamboa we will board our boat, to cruise about 40 km in the canal at about 26 mts above sea level, going through Gatun Lake, the second largest artificial lake in the world with 423 km2, to the narrowest and highest part of the canal, the famous Gaillard (Culebra) Cut where the most difficult part of the canal construction took place. We’ll navigate under the Centenario Bridge, built to join the Pacific and Atlantic and where you will have a chance to glance at the construction of the new set of locks. The tour will take you by natural habitats and you may even be able to see some of the tropical birds common to the area. We’ll then start descending the first 10 mts on our way to the Pacific in the Pedro Miguel Locks, then go on to the Miraflores lake and the second set of locks to descend the last 16 mts that will take us to the level of the Pacific Ocean. We’ll continue on by sailing under the Bridge of the Americas and end our canal crossing at the Amador Causeway for transfer back to your hotel. |

Day 4 – Embera Culture (Sunday) |
|
Starts at 8:30 from your hotel.
Our tour guide will greet you at your hotel to start our journey to the Port of Corotu where you will board a small motor boat for a ride on the Alajuela Lake, one of the artificial lakes created by the construction of the canal that also acts as a reservoir.
Our boat ride will take us through parts of the Chagres River with breathtaking views throughout our entire journey so bring your camara. Upon arrival at the small indigenous town, we’ll have a chance to swim in the river by a stunning waterfall, weather permitted.
This indigenous group of people have preserved their traditions and still live and dress as they did hundreds of years ago. You’ll get to see how they live and enjoy a traditional Embera dance show along with a traditional indian lunch consisting of fried fish and plantain served in banana leaves.
The males of this group, who start training as early as 8 years old, are known for their wood carved handcrafts that include bird, and animal figures, while the women specializing in weaved baskets adorned with flowers and images of tropical animals created using only natural colors from plants and roots. They still rely on plants for medical use and are well known for their knowledge of botanical medicine.
Return will be at about 3 pm. |

Day 5 – Anton Valley (Monday) |
|
Starts at 8.00 am from your hotel.
This tour starts from your hotel for a 2 hour drive to this amazing town.
The VALLE of ANTON is surrounded by mountains and stunning waterfalls and is approximately 600 mts above sea level atop an ancient extinct volcano. The town has a perfect spring climate all year round and lots of sunshine. This area is home to the famus golden frogs, square trees and many rare flowers and is great for bird-watching. We’ll visit the painted Stone with petroglyphs which is believed to be pre-colombian art, we will also visit the Chorro Macho waterfall by strolling through natural trails and breathtaking scenery. We will also tour a hill that is in the shape of a sleeping woman “India Dormida”, and is famous in local legends. We’ll then enjoy a local lunch and later have the opportunity to swim in the thermal waters, believed to help fight many ailments. Last but not least, we’ll visit the local market with a wide variety of Indian handcrafts, including wooden bowls, molas, paintings on wood, hammocks and many more curious handcrafts and sweets typical of the region. Return to the city will be around 4 pm. |

Day 6 – Monkey Island and Aerial Tram (Tuesday) |

This tour starts from your hotel. Accompanied by the tour guide you’ll enjoy our boat ride from Gamboa Marina. We’ll navigate the Chagres river passing the historic Gamboa bridge and then on to Gatun Lake, which is the second largest artificial lake in the world with 423 square kilometers.
This lake was formed by the construction of the Panama Canal over a hundred years ago. In our journey we’ll find ships on transit through the canal and visit some small islands along our way in search of iguanas, crocodiles, eagles, tucans and many other tropical animals and birds. Upon arrival at the main island there will be an interesting sightseeing tour giving us the chance to see other wildlife of the region such as the four different kinds of monkeys which live here.

Aerial Tram
Starts from your hotel. Different times available.
Float through a lush tropical forest by way of the aerial tram and let the jungle canopy submerge you in a wonderful once in a lifetime experience. Enjoy spectacular views of the Panama Canal in this incredible ride while marveling at enormous trees and exotic plants found only in this region.
We will also find exotic plants and rare birds such as our national bird, the Harpya Eagle one of the largest eagles in the world and also an endangered species. Upon returning to Gamboa we will visit the different animal and plants exhibitions like crocodiles, butterflies, fishes and exotic plants among others. |
